I’m going to pitch Marvel a bunch of stuff I’m pretty sure they won’t go for, just as proof of concept. I’ve talked about this one before, so why not?
I am aware the continuity has changed on D Man with this, but it’d work anyway, it’s just not as dramatic a first line hook.
Demolition
Dennis Dunphy woke up in his own grave with a bullet in his head.
He always wanted to be a superhero and for a while, gifted with superhuman strength, he was. And he died a hero. But his gift wouldn’t let him die, keeping him alive as he slowly healed, until he dug his way out of his own grave.
Alive, but not unharmed. Dunphy’s sanity was always tenuous, but the head injury has left him in a state where he believes he is a hero, fighting supervillains and saving the day. That’s what he sees. What the world sees is a crazy homeless man with superhuman strength attacking people.
But others see….opportunity. The criminal underworld realizes he’s a weapon that can be turned against others if they can direct him, feeding his delusions to weaken their enemies. And D Man is caught in the middle.
Essentially, taking what’s implicitly going on in Memento and putting it in a superhero context. What I am thinking here is that we either have two artists, or we have one artist who can do radically different styles.
One does a very clean, shining superhero style, and we use that when we’re seeing the story from the POV of Dunphy. And a gritty street style when we’re seeing it from the POV of anyone else.
